Malnutrition remains among the most critical problems worldwide, particularly for the underprivileged and poor in developing countries like Haiti and the Dominican Republic.  Poverty is a root cause of malnutrition as poor families lack the economic, environmental, and social resources to purchase or produce enough food. Civil strife, which Haiti has recently endured, also causes upheaval in the food system and can lead to widespread famine.

A healthy entry into this life is the birthright of every child. Yet in Haiti, a healthy birth is not something taken for granted. Haiti has one of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the world.

Breaking the cycle of poverty can start with one small loan. As an extension of International Child Care's health work, a Micro-Enterprise initiative was developed in the late 1980s to help release women and their children from poverty's grasp. Today, ICC has eleven existing Micro-Enterprise groups, averaging ten women each, as part of the Integrated Community Health Program in northern Haiti and is currently expanding to other regions.

Inadequate sanitation facilities contribute to the spread of disease in Haiti. Only 34% of Haitians use satisfactory sanitation facilities. The building of latrines, which significantly improves sanitation, helps fight the spread of disease. International Child Care partners with communities, specifically in northern Haiti, to construct latrines for individual families.
